Surviving the Spring Allergy Season

While you may look forward to the spring as a time of renewal, it is also the season when your allergies begin to appear. Allergy symptoms range from being a mild nuisance to a debilitating condition. Here are some ways of coping with your allergies when they begin to vex you.

Identify the Problem

  • Look for a pattern. – If you get allergy symptoms every year around the same time, then it is probably an allergy issue rather than a cold or infection.
  • Go to an Allergist. – Your allergist can give you a skin test and will also ask you important questions that will help determine what your allergies are.
  • Be aware of tree pollen. – Most spring allergies are caused by tree pollen.

Consider Getting Allergy Shots

While it takes a long time for them to work, allergy shots may be a wise option. These shots contain a small amount of the substance that you are allergic to. Over time, when you are exposed to the allergen on an ongoing basis, your body will grow accustomed to it. This is the only known cure for allergies.

Use Medication

There are a number of drugs that can deal with your allergies. Typically speaking, these medicines should not be used for an extended period of time without the advice of a physician.

  • Antihistamines – These drugs alleviate congestion and itchy and watery eyes.
  • Topical steroid creams – These treat itchy or dry skin.
  • Nasal sprays – These shrink swollen nasal tissues, making it easier to breathe.
  • Eye drops – These relieve itchy, teary, and red eyes.
  • Decongestants – These relieve nasal congestion, mucus, and swelling.

*Note that decongestants can cause side effects. These include elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, and insomnia.

Rinse Your Sinuses

Nasal irrigation is a therapy that is useful to clear out your nasal passages. You can use a device called a Neti pot. It looks like a little teapot. You fill it with saline solution and pour it into your nasal cavity.

Take Your Medication at the Right Times

You should start taking your medication on March 1st. If you wait until your symptoms develop, then it may be too hard to get them under control.

Use an Air Purifier

This device will remove contaminants from the air in your home. You should let it run continuously for the best results. Also, spring for air conditioning and keep your windows closed.

Quit Smoking

Smoking or being around second-hand smoke can aggravate your allergies. The smoke can inflame the eyes, nose, and throat. This will intensify the effect of allergens.

Avoid the trigger

  • Try to stay indoors during the peak hours of the day. This will reduce your exposure to pollen.
  • If you are going to mow your lawn, then wear a mask to reduce your exposure. You should use an N95 mask. It filters out 95 percent of particles.
  • You should wear sunglasses or goggles to keep pollen from coming into your eyes.
  • If you have issues with your skin, then cover up with long-sleeved clothing.

Allergies can really be a source of frustration and pain for people. By following the above tips, you can either control your symptoms or completely eliminate them.
